This is not because they are ticks, but rather because these ticks are the ones that carry the very dangerous bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi – the bacteria that causes lyme disease. These ticks often are no bigger than a poppy seed, which can make them nearly impossible to spot and remove before they bite. Lyme disease is transmitted through the bite of an infected tick.
