For centuries, coyotes primarily roamed what is now the western United States. As civilization moved westward the wide-open wilderness was transformed by farms, ranches, highways, towns and cities. In the process, wolves that were a danger to livestock and people were gradually eliminated. Wolves, of course, were also the coyotes primary predator as well. Now with its primary predator gone, the coyote population started to explode.
And the coyote migration to Georgia began. Now, the coyote is a major problem in neighborhoods, parks, farms, cities, towns and suburbs through out Georgia. The coyote can be a dangerous animal and none of us want to experience a coyote encounter. So, what can we do to control the coyote population in Georgia?
The solution is actually found in the origin of the explosion of the coyote population in Georgia. The key factor that caused the coyotes to come to Georgia in the first place was the elimination of the wolf. Coyotes instinctively fear wolves. It is a fear deeply rooted in a coyote’s DNA. With no wolves around, coyotes thrived and could go anywhere they wanted without fear...like right here in Georgia.
However, even though there may be no wolves around, coyotes still fear them and that fear is triggered by the scent of a wolf’s urine. In the wild, a wolf marks its territory by its urine. The coyote population in Georgia knows that a wolf’s territory is not a safe place to be.
For over 35 years, PredatorPee® has been providing pure, natural wolf urine for just this purpose in Georgia and just about everywhere else.
By applying PredatorPee® Wolf Urine, you create the illusion that a wolf is in the immediate area. As soon as a coyote catches a whiff of the wolf urine, the coyote leaves. The cycle of life for coyotes is quite interesting where pups are the center of life for about 7 months each year. The coyote breed in January and February and pups are born between mid-March and mid-April. Coyote's den sites are usually located within a half mile of a water source. Then in late-May to mid-June, the pups are moved from the den to hidden resting sites where the pups stay while the adults are hunting. These resting sites are often as close as a few hundred feet from houses. By September, the pups are self-sufficient and may either head off on their own or stay with their parents for several years. During this time female coyotes are very protective of their pups. Between March and September, 7 months of the year, pups are always around. So, it is another good reason to encourage coyote’s not to have their pups on or near your property.
