Over the last couple of decades, the range of coyotes has expanded so widely that coyotes can now be found virtually anywhere in the United States and most of Canada. Although it is rare for a coyote to attack humans, you certainly would not want to find a coyote in your backyard where your children play. Coyotes do however attack pets like small dogs, cats and rabbits and other small animals that share outdoor spaces near people: chickens, lambs, piglets etc. Coyotes simply see these animals as prey. We, of course, see them as something else entirely and we want to protect them any way we can.
According to Yellowstone Park observations, 80 or 90% of coyote deaths from wolves take places where wolves are feeding on a kill and a coyote gets a little too close. Wolves are territorial and they mark their territories with their urine. If the coyote enters the wolf’s territory to compete for food, the wolf always wins the food and the coyote dies.
Research in Canada has found that wolf packs seem to leave unoccupied “buffer zones” between the territories marked by each pack. They also have observed that coyotes have found these buffer zones to be safe havens where they can survive without fear of the wolf.
Coyotes can tell the boundaries of the “safe havens” by the scent of the territorial urine markings of the wolf. If they smell wolf urine, they know they are on the edge of a very dangerous place that would be very unwise to enter.
The concept of using predator urine to stop coyote threats and to prevent animals from going places where we don’t want them to be like yards, gardens and farms was first pioneered by PredatorPee® in 1986.
